Two men were shot dead in mid-afternoon today on one of Yerevan’s busiest corners and in front of dozens of eyewitnesses enjoying the last days of the capital’s café season.
According to witnesses, at 4 p.m. sharp four or five shots were fired by a man who appeared to be in his 30s, into the abdominal areas of the two victims who were standing near the Melody Café, one of several outdoor entertainment venues surrounding the Opera House, at the intersection of Mashtots Avenue and Tumanyan Street.
The shooter, dressed in black, fled on foot down Mashots Avenue and got into a car and escaped. Police on the scene say the car’s license plates have been recorded, and a hunt is under way to find the getaway vehicle.
The victims, who appeared to be in their 20s or 30s, have not been identified, although Yerevan Police Department Chief Nerses Nazaryan said one was a citizen of Georgia named Martirossyan. One of the dead men was carrying a pellet pistol.
Witnesses say there was confusion in the 15 or 20 minutes it took for an ambulance to arrive. One eyewitness told ArmeniaNow that bystanders dragged the bodies to the pavement, presumably to await the ambulance. But according the witness, when ambulance attendants arrived, they carried the bodies back to the spot where they were shot, and left them there for police to make measurements.
ArmeniaNow will report additional details as they become available.
