YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 20. ARMINFO. The Member of the Great National Assembly (GNA) of Turkey Ersiyonmez Yarbayn has recently expressed concern over the fact that the draft reforms of the Criminal Code of Turkey approved by the GNA provide for punishment for genocide.
According to the Turkish newspaper Hurriyet, the MP criticized the article of the CC related to genocide, adding that the given amendments may become a “headache” for Turkey, as Ankara has not recognized the Armenian Genocide. In his turn, Justice Minister of Turkey Cemil Chichek reassured the MP saying that the amendments to the Turkish CC have no retroactive effect.
It should be noted that it is for the first time that the Criminal Code of Turkey provides for punishment for genocide. It should be noted that recently, in his interview to the German newspaper Bild am Sonntag, Executive for extension of the EU Gunter Verhogen said that the reforms of the Turkish CC are a compulsory condition for beginning of negotiations for Turkeys admission to the EU
