EUROPEAN UNION TRIES TO ESTABLISH PEACE IN THE REGION

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 19. ARMINFO. European Union is ready to open a new chapter in the relations with the South Caucasian countries by historic changes. Chairman of the European Commission Romano Prodi has stated during the meeting with the students of European regional academy of information and communication technologies of Armenia on Sunday.

According to him, peace is necessary for it in the region, and EU tries to establish peace in the region and put an end to the conflicts and tense relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan. It also concerns the problems of Armenia with Turkey – and of Georgia with Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Nevertheless, EU is not a mediator. The organization does not have an army, though, may be 40 years later the European Union will have its armed forces. Romano Prodi mentioned that Europe is growing, working in right direction and becomes a support of a new policy. “However we must defend our principles only by establishment of democracy”, he added. The democracy must not be introduced with the help of the bombs or army, but only by political proposals. According to the chairman of the European Commission, in fact the expansion of the European Union became the expansion of democracy. Romano Prodi stressed the adoption of a new legislation by the parliaments of new members of EU, conducting administrative and governmental reforms, adding that Armenia also may take steps in this direction.
