Armenia ’s Sargis Sargsyan has advanced to the third round of the US Open in Flushing Meadows, New York.
Sargsyan, of Yerevan (and Florida), defeated Alex Corretja of Spain 2-6, 6-4, 6-0, 6-1 in the first round, and Nicolas Massu of Chile 7-6(6), 4-6, 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-4 in Thursday’s second round.
Number 6 seed Andre Agassi (USA) has also reached the third round with defeats Robby Ginepri (US) 7 7-6 5, 6-4, 6-2 and Germany’s Florian Mayer 7-5, 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (retired)
Argentina ’s David Nalbandian (seeded 8) advanced to the second round with a 6-4, 7-6(5), 6-3 victory over Dennis van Scheppingen from Netherlands. He faces Russian Mikhail Youzhny in today’s match.
In women’s singles Magdalena Maleeva (seeded 22) from Bulgaria scored a first-round win over Flavia Pennetta of Italy, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, but lost in the second round to America’s Angela Haynes, 2-6, 3-6.
