Armenian Parliamentarians From Around the Globe Gathered In Yerevan

YEREVAN (Combined Sources)–The first session of the Armenian Assembly of Parliamentary Friendship (AAPF) with the participation of parliamentarians of Armenian origin from different countries of the world, began in Yerevan on Friday. Some 70 Armenian deputies from the parliaments of 25 countries, as well as foreign members of the parliamentary groups of friendship with Armenia have arrived in the Armenian capital to participate in the forum.

AAPF was founded through the initiative of Arthur Baghdasaryan, President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia. The group’s aim is to promote the development of parliamentary democracy, develop inter-parliamentary ties and establish dialogue about pan-national issues. Session participants had the opportunity to meet with President Robert Kocharian on Friday.

In addressing the parliamentarians, Armenian Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanian noted that one of Armenia’s priorities is to build a state that in which democracy, economic stability and peace prevail. Although Armenia has done much in this direction, Oskanian stated, much work still remains.

Echoing Oskanian’s sentiments in his speech before members of the AAPF, Prime Minister Andranik Margarian said, “Armenia is moving ahead towards closer integration with European families and world economy, through developing democratic values and trying to surmount difficulties on this road to make the started process irreversible.”
