New Steps Expected to Settle Karabakh Conflict Soon

Azerbaijan’s parliamentary chairman, Murtuz Aleskerov, on Friday said new steps are expected to be taken to resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict soon, implying that any resolution of the conflict will retain Baku’s sovereignty over the occupied region.
According to Azadinform news agency, Aleskerov said that currently the Azerbaijani government is negotiating with the Armenian side on the latter’s withdrawal from the occupied territories.

“So, we have to wait and see how the attitude of the western states and OSCE’s Minsk group will be [on the Azeri position],” Aleskerov said, according Azadinform. “Our position on this problem is clear to everyone. We are not going to compromise on our territorial integrity.”

With regard to Armenian military officers’ expected visit to the Azeri capital to attend a Baku-hosted NATO conference on June 22, Aleskerov said, “I don’t want the Armenian officers to visit Baku, too. But we have to behave in a way that NATO’s attitude towards Azerbaijan remains unchanged.”
