Yerevan, May 25. /Mediamax/. The Armenian and U.S. sides signed an agreement on the allocation of more than $1 mln by the U.S. Department of State to strengthen the physical protection of Armenian Nuclear Power Plant (NPP).
NPP deputy director general Mushegh Shahinian said in the interview with Mediamax today that appropriate works are already being carried out and it is expected that they will be finished by March 2005.
According to Shahinian, the financial assistance was rendered within the framework of events on raising the level of NPP’s physical security on the post-Soviet territory, realized by the U.S. Department of Energy. The funds allocated by the U.S. side are directed at the realization of a part of the project on the modernization of the NPP’s physical security designed for 2004-2005.
The events on the modernization of NPP’s physical security are aimed at prevention of possible terrorist acts and protection of the plant against external interventions.
The government of Armenia endorsed a blueprint for the strengthening of the physical protection and safeguarding of the Armenian nuclear power station and nuclear materials on 11 September 2003.
The U.S. Ambassador John Ordway said in the exclusive interview to Mediamax last October that “there was absolutely no change in the U.S. policy with regard to the Armenian Nuclear Plant”.
“Our policy towards Armenian Nuclear Plant hasn’t change. We, like our partners in Europe believe that the Plant doesn’t meet modern safety standards and it should be shut down as soon as possible. At the same time, we have invested a lot of money to improve the safety standards for the plant and will continue to do it,” John Ordway said.
