Armenians won two gold medals and one silver medal at the 51 st European Greco-Roman Wrestling Championships last week in Haparanda, Sweden. However the Armenian team returned from competition with only one gold medal and one sixth place, as some winners represented nations other than Armenia.
The team was presented at the competition with six wrestlers competing against 205 wrestlers from 32 countries for prize places in six weight categories out of seven (Armenia was not presented only in 96 kg. weight category).
Vahan Juharyan from Gyumri won gold medal for Armenia in 60 kg weight category. In the semifinal he won victory over Turkish wrestler Emik Bünyamin and then in the final match Juharyan beat Serbia-Montenegro’s Davor Stefanek.
In the 66 kg. weight category Armen Vardanyan won, representing Ukraine at the championships. In the same category Zhora Vardanyan from Echmiadsin was sixth.
Artiom Kiouregyan representing Greece took silver medal in 55 kg. weight category as he lost in the final match to Turkish wrestler Bayram Özdemir.
The Armenian team tied with Israel and Poland (all with 15 points) for 10 th place.
