YEREVAN, MARCH 17. ARMINFO. Turkey cannot become a member of the European Union (EU) if it fails to meet the organization’s requirements particualrly that concerning the re-opening of its border with Armenia, Head of the European delegation of the Armenia-EU Interparliamentary Cooperation Commission Torben Holtze told ARMINFO.

Concerning the second EU requirement about the recognition of the Armenian Genocide, Holtze said: “Armenians’ suffering in Ottoman Turkey in 1915 is an indisputable historical fact, and Turkey must admit it.” Speaking of the prospects of Armenia’s admission to the EU, he stressed that it will take several years more. According to him, to get integrated into the EU Armenia needs structural political, economic and social reforms.

As regards the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, it must be settled in a peaceful way, Holtze said. It is a most delicate issue, he said. The right of the Nagorno-Karabakh people must be respected, and if no other ways of settlement are found, Nagorny Karabakh must at least be granted the highest-level autonomy, Holtze said.
