SINFONIA TORONTO LAUNCHES NEW CD

Sinfonia Toronto will launch its new CD on Thursday, April 1, with a special celebration event hosted by l’Atelier Grigorian, located at 70 Yorkville Avenue.

The CD features Mendelssohn’s Sinfonia No. 7, Shostakovich’s Chamber Symphony Opus 118a and Khachaturian’s Masquerade Suite. The Chamber Symphony and Masquerade Suite have both been recorded in new arrangements for string orchestra by Sinfonia Toronto’s Music Director Nurhan Arman. Maestro Arman arranged the Masquerade Suite for a program last year to celebrate Aram Khachaturian’s centenary year. This CD is the world-premiere recording of the popular Masquerade Suite in the new version.

Working with Sinfonia Toronto on the creation of the CD were Juno award-winning producer Keith Horner and the revered sound engineer David Burnham. Graphic artist Maxine Ching designed the CD insert. Recording sessions were held in the excellent acoustics of Humbercrest United Church in Toronto.

Maestro Arman explains the choice of music for the CD as an opportunity to interest listeners in a variety of styles and showcase Sinfonia’s ensemble energy and flair: “this CD has three exciting styles that are worlds apart from each other, but each really gutsy and intense in its own way, very exciting to hear, and they all show off the virtuosity and great musicianship of our players.”

Sinfonia Toronto is a 14-member string orchestra with a vast repertoire ranging from baroque to contemporary. The orchestra makes its home at Glenn Gould Studio and presents seven Main Series concerts and four Young People’s Concerts each season, as well as educational/outreach concerts around the city, performances with choirs, and concerts on local series in other Ontario centres. A number of concerts are recorded live at Glenn Gould Studio each season for regional and national broadcasts on CBC Radio Two.

The new CD will be released on the orchestra’s own Sinfonia Toronto Records label.
