arminfo: TRIAL IN CASE OF MURDER OF ARMENIAN OFFICER IN BUDAPEST TO START IN NEAREST FUTURE

YEREVAN, MARCH 3. ARMINFO. The investigation of the circumstances of the murder of an Armenian officer Gurgen Margaryan in Budapest is nearing completion. The case will be submitted to the Court. Representative of the Armenian community in Hungary Adam Sargssyan told RFE/RL. Margaryan was killed on Feb 19 by his Azerbaijani colleague Ramil Safarov with an axe. Both officers participated in English language courses.

According to Adam Sargssyan, 6 officers of various nationalities, the participants of these courses, gave testimonies. All the witnesses state that the crime was planned beforehand, Sargssyan said. He noted that the criminal intended to kill a second Armenian officer as well, Moreover, the criminal admitted that he planned the crime beforehand. He said that he took vengeance for his relatives killed in Feb of 1993 in the course of the KaArabakh conflict. He said he intended to carry out this crime on Feb 26, however, on the day of the murder, on Feb 19, it seemed to him that the Armenian officer smiled at him “dubiously.” The Azerbaijani officer did not like it and decided to accelerate the developments.

In response to the question where the trial on Safarov will take place and whether his extradition to Azerbaijan is possible, Adam Sargssyan expressed almost a 100 percent confidence that the Azerbaijani officer will be punished in conformity with Hungarian laws and will serve his sentence in Hungary. “As neither Armenia nor Azerbaijan have relevant bilateral agreements with Hungary, his extradition is impossible. The maximum punishment stipulated by the Hungarian laws is life imprisonment,” Sargssyan said.-
