SINFONIA TORONTO TO PREMIERE ARUTUNIAN WORK
Sinfonia Toronto and conductor Nurhan Arman will present the Canadian premiere of Alexander Arutunian’s ‘Sinfonietta’ on March 6, at 8 pm in Glenn Gould Studio.
Arutunian’s Sinfonietta was written in 1966 and remains one of the composer’s most popular works. After hearing the Sinfonietta the great Soviet composer Dmitri Shostakovich commended the work in a letter to Arutunian, saying “I liked the piece very much. It is amazingly clear and lucid. Wonderful themes. It seems to be unpretentious while at the same time it conveys an interesting and innovative manner of composition.”
Alexander Arutunian was born in 1920 in Yerevan. He studied in Yerevan as well as in Moscow under Heinrich Litinsky. He is a prolific composer and has composed in a wide variety of genres. He holds the titles of People’s Artist of Soviet Union and Laureate of the State Prize of Armenia. He has served as artistic director of the Armenian Philharmonic and as professor of conducting at the Komitas Conservatory.
Maestro Arman finds the Sinfonietta a fascinating work. “Arutunian’s personality comes across in this witty and energetic and piece. It’s full of humour and yet at times very thoughtful. He is one of the most impressive composers of our times, and I really think this Sinfonietta belongs in the repertoire of every virtuoso chamber orchestra.”
The concert on March 6 will feature the brilliant Canadian flutist Leslie Newman. Ms. Newman will play Mercadante’s E minor Flute Concerto and ‘Forgotten Deams’ by Canadian composer John Burge.
Also on the program is a new string orchestra arrangement of Beethoven’s Quartet Opus 95 by Nurhan Arman, and a lively Bohemian Sinfonia by Franz Benda.
CBC Radio Two will record the concert for regional and national broadcasts.
