Armenian Church Mourns the Passing of Very Rev. Fr. Manuel Vartabed
Yergatian
February 13, 2004
To Members of the St. James Brotherhood of Jerusalem:
It is with deep sorrow that we convey to you the passing of a young member
of the St. James Brotherhood, Very Rev. Fr. Manuel Vartabed Yergatian, which
occurred at a hospital in Almelo, Holland on the evening of Wednesday,
February 11, 2004.
The Extreme Unction and Priestly Burial Service will take place at St.
Gregory the Illuminator Armenian Church in Almelo on Monday, February 16,
2004. His Eminence Archbishop Nurhan Manoogian, Grand Sacristan, will
participate in the Order of the Funeral Service representing the St. James
Brotherhood. In addition, we will hold a Requiem Service on Saturday,
February 14, 2004 at the St. James Armenian Cathedral in Jerusalem.
The late Very Rev. Fr. Manuel Yergatian was born in Istanbul in 1954.
He was a student at the Armenian Theological Seminary of Jerusalem from
1968-1973, and returned to Istanbul to fulfill his two years of military
service. In 1976, His Beatitude Archbishop Shnork Kaloustian of blessed
memory, Armenian Patriarch of Constantinople, ordained him a celibate
priest. In 1977, he was accepted as a member of the St. James Brotherhood
of Jerusalem.
Having been talented in the art of painting, he faithfully completed
all responsibilities entrusted upon him. While returning to Istanbul for
vacation in 1980, he was imprisoned and tortured, for political reasons, for
five years.
Since 1991, he served as the spiritual pastor of the Armenian community
of Holland.
We pray that the Lord accept the soul of His dedicated servant and spiritual
cultivator of the Holy Church.
“Remember Lord, with Thy abundant mercy, the soul of the servant of Thy
Holy Church, and grant him rest in the light of Thy divine countenance in
the heavenly Kingdom.”
With Greetings of Love,
Archbishop Torkom Manoogian
Armenian Patriarch of Jerusalem
