YEREVAN, DECEMBER 8. ARMINFO. Armenia’s President Robert Kocharyan visited Spitak Sunday on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the Spitak Earthquake. Kocharyan walked in the town center restored by the Lincy Foundation.
Some 560 families have been given new flats under the Lincy program in the last two years, but 604 more families still need housing. 280 of them will receive houses under the Urban Institute housing certificate program. To remind, the earthquake razed the town to the ground destroying 5,143 flats and houses and claiming over 4,000 lives. 1,860 new flats have been built in the town since then.
Spitak’s Mayor Vanik Asatryan says that the town needs a sport school. Kocharyan promised to allocate the necessary sum. The Revival of Spitak Fund has financed the construction of 4 houses and a bus terminal. The fund is sponsored by philanthropists-natives of Spitak, one of them the big Moscow businessman Robert Asmaryan. Asmaryan says that next year the fund will be increased by $1 mln. There is also a cattle breeding farm OFMA operating the town and employing up to 200 people.
