armenianow: Six Armenians make FIDE list of world best

The World Chess Federation’s list of top chess players for October 2003, include five Armenians among the Top 100 men and one woman in the Top 50.

Grandmaster Vladimir Hakopyan is ranked 22nd in the world, with 2,684 FIDE points. Grandmaster Levon Aronyan is 47th (2,649). Smbat Lputyan is 62nd (2,630), Rafael Vahanyan is 73rd (2,623) and Gabriel Sargsyan in 81st (2,614).

The best chess player in the world is Garry Kasparov, an Armenian who represents Russia. Kasparov has 2,830 points.

Despite victory at the European Team Chess Championships in Bulgaria last month only Lilit Mkrtchyan made the list among women, taking 43rd place with 2,413 points.

Both Armenian men and woman chess players are preparing for the 13th World Championship for Seniors 2003 that will be taking place in Bad Zwischenahn (Germany) November 16th-29th.
