YEREVAN, OCTOBER 10. ARMINFO. Armenia will continue its dialogue with Turkey, Armenia’s FM Vartan Oskanyan said at the Thursday round-table on the opening of the Armenian-Turkish border. He said that he is going to meet with his Turkish counterpart after the presidential election in Azerbaijan.
The rapprochement with Turkey meets the interests of Armenia, whose key task today is to register some progress in bilateral relations with the key emphasis laid on the opening of the Armenian-Turkish border. At the same time, Yerevan realizes that this process will take some time. The key obstacle to it is Turkey’s precondition that first Armenia should settle its conflict with Azerbaijan. True, lately Ankara has seemed to be less categorical in linking the two questions, but the issue has not been lifted from the agenda yet.
For the time being Yerevan is not planning to establish diplomatic relations with Ankara. The question is about gradual rapprochement and subsequent opening of the border. Lack of diplomatic relations does not exclude the possibility of open border. The first stage of rapprochement should be the improvement of the atmosphere between the state, then the beginning of a dialogue for the establishment of diplomatic relations. However, one may expect complications here, particularly, in the issue of international recognition of the Armenian Genocide.
