On Sunday, September 28, 2003, almost 60 pilgrims from the Diocese of the Armenian Church of America (Eastern) attended a special Divine Liturgy in the Mother Cathedral of the Holy See of Etchmiadzin.
The liturgy, celebrated by Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, Primate of the Eastern Diocese, commemorated the 1,700th anniversary of the consecration of the Cathedral of Etchmiadzin. His Holiness Karekin II, Catholicos of All Armenians, presided over the service.
This anniversary year, pilgrims from all over the world have traveled to Armenia for special Divine Liturgies. The group of pilgrims from the Eastern Diocese arrived in Armenia on Wednesday, September 24, and will be there until Monday, October 6.
Along with attending the special Divine Liturgy, the group has had a private audience with Catholicos Karekin II, toured the treasures of Holy Etchmiadzin, and visited the St. Gayane and St. Hripsime Churches. They have also seen evidence of Armenia’s continued Christian growth, visiting the St. Gregory the Illuminator Cathedral in Yerevan on Saturday.
Today — Tuesday, September 30, 2003 — the participants are scheduled to visit the 13th-century Keghart Church and meet with U.S. Ambassador to Armenia John Ordway and Director of the U.S. Agency for International Development in Armenia, Keith Simons, who will detail how American assistance is helping Armenia redevelop.
