ANKARA – Having met Prime Minister Erdogan, Armenian Patriarch Mesrob Mutafyan II visited Parliamentary Human Rights Investigation Commission Chairman Mehmet Elkatmis. Recalling a permanent working group established to deal with the problems certain religious congregations have been trying to work out, the chairman stated that various social groups and congregations were suffering from many challenges that had to be coped with by both the government and the assembly. Elkatmis underlined the efforts they had taken up to solve these problems and added that a report would be handed to the officials once the work was completed.
Regarding all freedoms as possessing important roles, the chairman said, as far as he was concerned, the freedom of belief must enjoy a privileged position since all religious doctrines aimed to enlighten humans in terms of being a good person. “No matter which religion he believes in, a person will cause no harm at all as long as he has his faith,” said Elkatmis. He also expressed his gratitude to the patriarch for the efforts the latter had spent to prevent a report running down Turkey from being issued.
While underlining the traditional visits he’d been making to PMs to offer the Armenian society’s goodwill once a new government is founded, the patriarch pointed out that he met Erdogan yesterday. Mutafyan said as long as Turkey means well, any problem could be easily overcome. “In the new legislation, the harmonisation packages will be implemented, a fact which every citizen shall enjoy. We regard to every church, mosque, synagogue, and even an assembly as sacred — since it is where the national will is represented”, said the patriarch.
