Judo World Championships
Six Armenian contestants were among 587 fighters from 97 countries who took part in the 2003 World Judo Championships.
Armen Nazaryan (60kg), Ghazaros Grigoryan (66kg), Varuzhan Israelyan (73kg), Harutyun Gharibyan (81kg), Artur Gasparyan (100kg) took part in the men’s competiton in Osaka, Japan. Kristineh Najaryan fought in the women’s 52kg category.
None of the Armenian fighters took prize-winning places at the championships.
World Greek and Roman Wrestling Championships
Seven Armenian wrestlers will travel to France for the World Greek and Roman Wrestling Championships next month. The competition in seven weight categories will open on October 1 in Paris.
The World Greek and Roman Wrestling Championships will also be the qualifying round for the Olympic Games in Athens in 2004.
Tennis (ATP Tour)
Sargsyan was seeded third at the Romanian Open.
After the hard and tiring US Open, only Sargis Sargsyan among tennis players of Armenian heritage decided to participate at one of the two competitions of the International Series that immediately followed the Grand Slam event.
He entered the Romanian Open from September 8 to 14 in Bucharest, where he was seeded third. Sargisyan reached the quarterfinals, where he lost 6-2, 3-6, 4-6 to the Romanian player Razvan Sabau.
Sargsyan collected 8 race points and earned ˆ10,600 at the tournament. In the first round he easily defeated Franco Squillari from Argentina, 6-2 6-2, and beat Romanian Ion Moldovan 7-5, 6-1 in the second round.
