YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 19, ARMENPRESS: Armenian education and science minister Sergo Yeritsian told a news conference today that the first phase of a govenrment-designed plan of “optimization of schools” was accomplished with 37 merged schools and 5,000 teachers laid off. The second phase of the plan will hit another 9,000 teachers.
Yeritsian said the average number of pupils in high grades is from 20 to 25 and that in low classes from 25 to 30. Some 744 schools in rural areas avoided “optimization,” as they are the only schools in their communities. Yeritsian said a $2.5 million worth assistance project is being discussed with World Bank that would give the sacked teachers one time aid in the amount of their six month salary.
