YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 17, ARMENPRESS: Ara Abrahamian, a Russian tycoon of Armenian descent, who founded the influential Union of Russian Armenians and was proclaimed UNESCO’s goodwill envoy, told a news conference in Yerevan today that he may meet in late September with US president George W. Bush to discuss investments in the Armenian economy and foundation of the World Organization of Armenians.
The founding meeting is scheduled for October 7-8 in the Russian capital of Moscow with around 200 representatives of Armenian organizations across the globe confirming their participation.
Abrahamian said it was decided to hold the congress in the Russian capital as Russia hosts the biggest Armenian community, which according to some estimates is about 2.5 million.
Abrahamian said the idea of founding the World Organization of Armenia is supported by many communities across the globe, as they all realize that it would bring only benefits to Armenia and all involved parties.
Abrahamian had already visited the USA and France last summer to seek the active involvement of their Armenian communities in the preparation work for the congress.
He said the organization’s headquarters will be in Yerevan with around 300-memebr staff. It will also have branch offices in all counties with strong Armenian communities.
