Perugia striker Zissis Vryzas scored late in the first half to give
Greece a 1-0 victory over Armenia on Saturday in their Euro 2004
Group 6 qualifier.
Vryzas scored in the 37th minute off a pass from Bolton midfielder
Setlios Giannacopoulos, who capitalized on Armenian defenders’
mistakes and took control over the ball about 10 meters outside the
hosts’ penalty box.
Greece missed a good chance in the 26th, when Giannacopoulos
connected on a pass from AEK defender Michalis Kapsis from the right,
and forced Armenia goalkeeper Roman Berezovsky to fist his kick from
5 meters.
Fifteen minutes into the second half, Armenia’s Artavazd Karamyan
made a solo effort down the left flank but striker Arman Karamyan
missed his pass just outside the goal box.
Vryzas was close to scoring a second goal six minutes later, but
Berezovsky made a stunning save to stop his kick from inside the box.
Greece was playing without key playmaker Vassilis Tsiartas, a
midfielder for AEK Athens, who was injured two weeks ago.
It was Greece’s fifth consecutive victory, and gave the group leader
15 points. Armenia lost its fourth match and has 4 points.
Greece will host Northern Ireland in its last qualifier on Oct. 11.
Armenia visits Northern Ireland on Wednesday.
