Up till now, Armenian diamond processing companies have imported
50,000 of the 400,000 carats of uncut diamonds allocated to Armenia
under the Russian quota.
Gagik Mkrtchyan, chief of the department for jewellery production and
processing of precious stones, told our correspondent that the active
period of diamond cutting was September and October and the planned
amount of diamonds would be fully imported by the end of the year.
Mkrtchyan believes that fluctuations in world prices do not prevent
the department from regularly importing precious stones, and the
diamonds handed over to Armenia will be divided among 20 companies.
A total of 50 enterprises and 7,000 people work in this sphere in
Armenia.
