Two Armenian club teams—Gyumri’s Shirak and Yerevan’s Banants—were eliminated from United European Football Association (UEFA) Cup competition during the final second-leg matches of the qualifying round, which were held on Thursday, August 28.
Shirak lost its second-leg match 0-2 to FC Nordsjaelland. Shirak had lost its first-leg match to FC Nordsjaelland 0-4, thus giving the Danish team a 6-0 overall victory in the series and allowing it to advance to the next round.
Banants lost a more hard fought series to Hapoel Tel Aviv. The two clubs ended their first-leg match in a 1-1 tie. However, Hapoel’s 2-1 victory over Banants on Thursday gave the Israeli team a 3-2 victory in the series.
The UEFA Cup is a competition open to soccer teams throughout Europe and used to determine the best European club teams. The clubs play a two-game series during each round, where the aggregate score is used to determine the team that advances to the next stage.
