288 convicts have been discharged since August 1, when the new Criminal Code (CC) came into force. As head of the department of structural reforms of the Armenian ministry of justice Nikolay Arustamian told Armenia TV Company, some prisoners were released because the crimes committed by them were no longer punishable due to the new CC. The representative of the ministry of justice supposes that the number of convicts discharged being rather considerable should not deteriorate the criminogenic situation in Armenia. Arustamian also informed that in connection of adoption of the new CC 700 more prisoners are to be released in Armenia by the end of 2003.
