YEREVAN, AUGUST 1, ARMENPRESS: About 200 convicts were released today from prisons after a new Criminal Code has entered into force, stimulating that many of about 3,000 Armenian convicts, sentenced under the previous, stricter Code, be freed or have their terms shortened.
Armenian justice ministry said some other 800 convicts will be released after courts review their previous verdicts.
The new code was passed by the parliament last April to replace the old one, passed yet in 1961. Officials say it was designed based on Council of Europe requirements and taking into consideration new codes passed by some CIS member and Europe’s countries.
