WORLD No.1 Andre Agassi won his first match since a fourth-round exit at
Wimbledon, defeating Switzerland’s Ivo Heuberger 6-3 6-1 today at the
$600,000 ATP Washington Classic
It was the first ATP hardcourt match for Agassi, a five-time champion
here, in his preparations for next month’s US Open.
Agassi, the oldest player in the field at 33, advanced to the third round
after an opening bye. He will now face the winner of tomorrow’s (AEST) match
between Armenia’s Sargis Sargsian and Czech Jiri Vanek.
Britain’s Greg Rusedski also advanced with a 6-2 6-4 second-round wvictory
over Peru’s Ivan Miranda.
In first-round results, Sweden’s Thomas Enqvist defeated Australian
qualifier Jaymon Crabb 6-4 6-3 and France’s Cyril Saulnier beat South
Africa’s Wesley Moodie 7-6 (7-1) 4-6 7-5
