Sydney, Australia – His Eminence Archbishop Aghan Baliozian, Primate of the
Diocese of the Armenian Church of Australia & New Zealand is one among a
notable list of Australians to receive the Centenary Medal.
The Centenary Medal was announced by the Prime Minister of Australia, The
Honourable John Howard MP on 28 December 2001 as part of the celebration
year commemorating Australia’s first hundred years as a federal nation. The
Medal was created to honour living persons who have made a contribution to
Australian society or government throughout the first century of federation.
Archbishop Baliozian was presented with the Centenary Medal at a special
Award Ceremony hosted by Federal Member of Parliament, The Hon Dr Brendan
Nelson MP on Thursday 24 July 2003 at Willoughby Town Hall. The Ceremony
was attended by government officials and community representatives.
In receiving this Medal, Archbishop Baliozian is recognised for his valued
contribution and service to the community. In his letter of congratulations
to the Archbishop, Dr Brendan Nelson writes, “those who give in life get
much more than others who take all they can. Similarly, success can be
measured by the commitment we have to bettering the lives of others. In
this sense especially, your award is well deserved.”
Archbishop Baliozian’s contribution to community life is not limited to his
Armenian parishioners but extends to the broader Australian community as
well as local and international ecumenical community.
In 1995, Archbishop Aghan Baliozian was awarded the prestigious Order of
Australia Medal (OAM) for service worthy of particular recognition.
