Picture of Sinfonia Toronto

Sinfonia Toronto will celebrate Aram Khachaturian’s 100th anniversary with a special concert on November 22, 2003. The program will focus on the Armenian master’s career as a highlight of the orchestra’s 2003-2004 Main Series. The concert will take place at Glenn Gould Studio in the Canadian Broadcasting Centre in Toronto where the orchestra makes its home.

In making the announcement Sinfonia Toronto’s Music Director and Conductor Nurhan Arman said, “Our concert will be a special tribute to this great composer, with music that was written in tribute to him, or inspired or influenced by him, and music that was written by his colleagues as well as some of his own loveliest pieces. Khachaturian was one of the most important composers of the 20th Century, and I am happy to devote an entire concert to his genius.”

The outstanding violinist Movses Pogossian will be the featured soloist, performing Khachaturian’s Nocturne and Arutunian’s Violin Concerto.

The fourteen-piece string orchestra regularly records for CBC Radio Two and is heard in broadcasts throughout Canada. The orchestra tours to other Ontario centres and is slated to tour Europe in the spring of 2005. The orchestra’s repertoire ranges from baroque to contemporary, with an emphasis on the Romantic repertoire.

Violinist Movses Pogossian was a prize-winner at the 1986 Tchaikovsky Competition. He was also the youngest artist ever to win First Prize at the USSR National Violin Competition in 1985. He made his American debut in 1990, performing the Tchaikovsky

Concerto with the Boston Pops Orchestra. Since then he has appeared with orchestras around the world. He has performed recitals in the major halls of USA and Europe, and has participated in chamber music with the members of the Tokyo, Kronos, Brentano and Borromeo String Quartets. Mr. Pogossian has been featured frequently on National Public Radio and has recorded for the Summit, Melodia, and Albany labels.
