ISTANBUL. JULY 21, ARMENPRESS: Some 500,000 copies of a book called “Art as a Means of Armenian Propaganda, the Example of Ararat Film,” were sold in Turkey in the last three months. The book was conceived and designed by Turkish foreign ministry with the contributions on part of prime minister’s office, chief staff of armed forces and Eurasian Research Center. It was released in 2002.
The book was designed as “a worthy retaliation to Armenian claims about the 1915 genocide by the example of Atom Egoyan’s film Ararat.”
A similar idea was floated in Turkey in 1992 with the mounting Armenian campaign for the international recognition of the 1915 genocide, but the scheme failed because of the lack of necessary funds. The idea came back after the release of Egoyan’s film in 2001.
The book ranks Egoyan’s film with about another 50 films depicting the truth about the Armenian genocide. Turkish publishers say they are satisfied with the reaction of the public and plan to release new copies.
