ARA ABRAHAMIAN NAMED UNESCO GOODWILL AMBASSADOR

UNESCO on Tuesday announced President of the Union of Russian Armenians Ara Abrahamian its goodwill envoy. UNESCO Director General Koichiro Matsuura presented a goodwill envoy diploma to the Russian public figure at the UNESCO Paris headquarters, Armenpress reported, quoting Itar Tass.

UNESCO notes the special contribution of Ara Abrahamian to the promotion of dialog between cultures and religions, Matsuura said, and values high the contribution of the Russian businessman to the medical and AIDS prevention and treatment projects. The promotion of cross-cultural dialog is one UNESCO’s priorities, Matsuura added.

The goodwill envoy title acknowledges Abrahamian’s contribution to the implementation of numerous important projects in the humanitarian sphere. Abrahamian told Itar-Tass the mandate of UNESCO goodwill envoy compels him to make more efforts on this direction in the new capacity.

The title of goodwill envoy shows special trust on the part of the international community, he said. He said work on implementing specific UNESCO-sponsored cross-cultural dialog projects is already underway.

“A dialog between civilizations is the main theme in my life,” Abrahamian said, “it should be based on tolerance, as the most important principle and necessary condition for peace and socio-economic development of all peoples, regardless of their nationality, race or religion.” “Life taught our ancestors that only by helping others you can help yourself,” he said.

According to Abrahamian, the high title will help him in establishing an international Armenian organization. His idea to bring together, under one leadership, the Armenian communities in 72 countries the world over should materialize at the World Congress of Armenians in Moscow in October, 2003, he said.

He is also hoping that UNESCO’s authority will help him contribute to the solution of the Nagorno Karabagh problem. Armenia and Azerbaijan, as neighboring states, can and should resolve all disputed issues through dialogue, Abrahamian said.
