YEREVAN, JULY 3, ARMENPRESS: Professors of Yerevan State University reacted today to yesterday’s killing of the dean of the faculty of Russian studies at Yerevan University, Karen Mkrtchian, who was shot dead in the center of Yerevan by unknown assailants. A statement released by the professors condemns, as it says ‘the broad daylight murder of a man and a scholar dedicated to his work, which was a shock for us”.
The statement calls on president Kocharian to order the appropriate agencies to speed up the investigation, “otherwise the undisclosed murder will be fraught with unpredictable consequences.”
A local newspaper dismissed today a theory that the murder might be linked with some students who failed to pass state exams, saying the students who failed their exams were girls. It suggested that the killer might have taken Mkrtchian for the real target, who was a different man.
