armenpress: ARAM II DECORATES ATOM EGOYAN

ANTELIAS, JULY 2, ARMENPRESS: On Monday evening at the end of a gathering organized in the Armenian Catholicosate of Cilicia, His Holiness Aram I decorated Atom Egoyan, an internationally acclaimed and distinguished filmmaker and the director of the internationally praised film `ARARAT’, and his wife Arsinee Khandjian, a highly respected actress, a press release by the Catholicosate of Cilicia said.

The audience was composed of political and community representatives of Lebanese communities, ambassadors, ministers, deputies and representatives of the Armenian community organizations. The presence of former president of Lebanon and key political leaders gave a special character to the event.

Dr Joe Pirri from Switzerland, professor of theater and communication, presented Atom Egoyan as an internationally acclaimed filmmaker, and Arsinee Khandjian, a distinguished actress.

Mr. Misbah El-Ahdab, a deputy in the parliament of Lebanon, spoke of the Armenian Genocide as an unforgettable tragedy, particularly emphasizing renaissance of the Armenian people in the Middle East and in the worldwide Diaspora.

Mr. Walid Jomblat, a deputy, former minister and the president of the Socialist Party, speaking about the human rights, referred to all genocidal activities and plans taking place in the Middle East and in deferent parts of the world.

His Holiness Aram I in his concluding remarks developed his reflections about the word `justice’. He said: `The message of this event is condensed in one word; Justice. Justice has been at the center of human life from its very inception on this planet and continues to impact all aspects and spheres, dimensions and manifestations of the fabric of human society. Justice has caused and continues to cause so much joy and suffering, hope and hopelessness, life and death’.

Addressing his word to Atom Egoyan, Catholicos Aram I said: `Through your recent movie, `Ararat’, you remind the international community the critical urgency of justice; you remind humanity that your nation, the Armenian nation is a victim of justice and its human rights remain violated. Furthermore, you remind the people of this world that neither the attempts aimed at relativizing history or denial of truth, neither geopolitical interests nor arrogance of power can erase from the collective memory of a nation a well organized and systematically executive genocide against a nation’.

Concluding his intervention, His Holiness said: `We are committed to dialogue, to peace and reconciliation. This is integral to our identity and national ethos. But frank dialogue and true reconciliation must be based on justice. As Christians, we believe in forgiveness, but confession should precede forgiveness’.

At the end of his closing remarks, His holiness decorated Atom Egoyan and his wife Arsinee Khandjian with the `Saint Mesrob Mashdots’ insignia of the Armenian Catholicosate of Cilicia.

Atom Egoyan and Arsinee Khandjian expressed their thanks to His Holiness and reaffirmed their attachment to the Armenian Cause, which is a cause of justice, and hence, a cause of humanity.

The Armenian Catholicosate of Cilicia is one of the two Catholicosates of the Armenian Orthodox Church.
