Last year’s Wimbledon finalist Argentine-Armenian David Nalbandian has advanced through the first round of the world’s most famous tennis tournament.
Nalbandian, seeded No. 6 this year, advanced with a straight-set victory (7-5, 6-4, 6-2) over Vladimir Voltchkov of Belarus.
Should Nalbandian repeat his success of last year, he would face a new opponent in the finals, as top-seed Lleyton Hewitt was among first-round casualties, as the Australian fell to new comer Ivo Karlovic of Croatia.
No. 2 seed Andre Agassi has also advanced, with a 6-4, 6-0, 5-7, 6-4 victory over Jamie Delgado of Great Britain.
On the women’s side, Magdalena Maleeva (who, like Nalbandian and Agassi is of Armenian ancestry) of Bulgaria scored a first-round victory (6-0, 6-1) over Anca Barna of Germany.
As of this report, Yerevan’s Sargis Sargsyan is awaiting his first match, as he will face Alex Bogdanovic of the United Kingdom. And French-Armenian Marie-Gayane Mikaelyan is to face Marissa Irvin of the United States.
