June 3, Armenpress: Victor Kazantsev, the representative of the Russian president in the southern federal okrug, arrived today in Armenia on a three-day visit. Talking to reporters upon his arrival, the Russian official said he is going to discuss with Armenian officials an array of proposals aimed to boost economic, social and cultural relations between Armenia and Russia’s south, which is home to the biggest Armenian community across the globe.
Trade turnover between Armenia and Russia’s southern district amounted last year to a meager $12.9 million. Kazantsev said neither Armenians nor Russians are satisfied with this figure. He said he has brought several leading businessmen from the region who are eager to seek partners in Armenia.
Kazantsev, a former career military, is traveling tomorrow to Armenian Gyumri, where he served for a decade with the Russian military base. In Gyumri he will be awarded Honorary Citizen title.
“We defended Armenian borders when it was part of the Soviet Union, and now a new generation of border guards defends the borders of Russia’s most loyal ally in the region,” he said. Kazantsev will meet with president Kocharian, prime minister Margarian and head of the Armenian Church Catholicos Karekin II.
