MAY 24. A monument to Marshal Hovahannes Baghramian has been unveiled in Yerevan today. Attending the ceremony were Armenian President Robert Kocharian, Prime Minister Andranik Margarian, Minister of Defense Serge Sargssian, other officials.
Talking to journalists, Minister of Defense Serge Sargssian reported that great people’s achievements must be properly evaluated, and monuments are the best evaluation of their activities. He stressed that the ceremony has nothing to do with the parliamentary elections. Sargssian reminded the journalists that the monument was to be unveiled on May 9, but the work had not been finished and the unveiling was postponed. During the ceremony, Minister Sargssian awarded war veterans the Msarshal Baghramian Medal.
In his turn, Yerevan Mayor Robert Nazarian pointed out that the monument will symbolize the glory of Yerevan and Armenia. He thanked the Ministry of Defense and Serge Sargssian, due to whose active assistance “the long-standing dream of the Armenian people has come true.” He also expressed gratitude to the “Marshal Baghramian” organization, as well as to the sculptor Norair Karganian and the architect Eduard Arevshatian.
The new monument is situated on Baghramian Ave., in front of the American University of Armenia. It depicts the legendary military commander sitting on a horse with a service cap in his hands.
