YEREVAN, MAY 16, ARMENPRESS: Officials of Armenia’s Central Election
Commission (CEC) and Police met today to discuss a set of questions involving
the May 25 parliamentary elections and a national referendum on Constitution.
CEC chairman Artak Sahradian said the number of precincts has grown from
1,864 to 1,885 after 2,000 new voters have been registered due to voter
lists’ verification.
Sahradian also said police launched investigation into an election
incident reported from the province of Kotayk where the armed supporters of a
candidate assaulted the election office of another candidate. He also denied
press reports that a murder committed Thursday in a precinct was linked to
approaching elections.
Deputy chief of police Hovhanes Varian said some 10,000 police officers
will be dispatched to precincts to keep public order on the election day.
Some 2,500 police officers will be send to regions. He asked the CEC to find
a way for these 2,500 officers to vote as they will not be able to do so
being far from their permanent residence areas.
