YEREVAN, MAY 13, ARMENPRESS: Secretary General of NATO George Robertson is arriving in Armenia May 14 for a two-day visit. Ahead of the visit he shared with Armenpress his vision of challenges faced by NATO, regional security and other issues.
“Until recently, the Caucasus region seemed to some to have only a small place on the international security map. But on 11 September 2001, in the wake of the terrorist attacks in the United States, that map was totally redrawn. Today, the Caucasus region is seen for what it is: an area of crucial importance to our common security,” he said.
According to Robertson, NATO recognized this fact at our Summit meeting in Prague last November. The Summit Declaration noted that the Caucasus is a strategically important area for the Alliance. It also set out a vision of deeper cooperation between NATO and our partner countries of this region – including, of course, Armenia.
