azg: TRANSPARENT BOXES TO BE USED FOR PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS

Armenia’s Central Election Commission (CEC) approved Monday a decision on using transparent ballot boxes for May 25 parliamentary elections and a concurrent national referendum on constitutional amendments. The OSCE Yerevan office has pledged to bring another 3,400 boxes that will be installed along with previously brought 2,000 ones, for recent presidential polls, in all precincts, two or three boxes at each, one for parliamentary elections, the others for referendum.

In March, the OSCE Yerevan Office offered to provide the CEC with additional transparent ballot boxes so that multiple boxes could be used for the upcoming parliamentary elections and constitutional referendum. However, the CEC turned down this offer.

On May 6, the CEC Chairman approached the OSCE Office to provide the additional boxes. Despite the extremely late notification, the Office has managed to make arrangements for additional ballot boxes to be produced and delivered to Armenia for the May 25 elections. In addition, the Office was able to secure international donor support for this initiative. On May 10, the OSCE Office has preliminarily agreed with the CEC Chairman to provide transparent ballot boxes.

The OSCE Office in Yerevan welcomed the willingness of the CEC to use multiple transparent ballot boxes for the upcoming elections expressing hope that the use of transparent ballot boxes will contribute to the transparency of the electoral process.
