armenpress: THERE ARE 13,000 WW II VETERANS IN ARMENIA

YEREVAN, MAY 8, ARMENPRESS: Among the first divisions to victoriously enter Berlin in 1945 were the Armenian divisions (the 89th Tamanian Mechanized Infantry Division which fought its way to the Brandenburg Gate through street skirmishes with the enemy, 408th Armenian Guard Division, 409 th Armenian National division, 390th Infantry Division, “Sasountsi David” Tank Column).

In 1945 the War ended, the Armenian casualties of the Great Patriotic War were into hundreds of thousands. Many Armenians were awarded the medal and honor of the Hero of the Soviet Union, the highest honorable medal that could be bestowed and rewarded in the Soviet Union. Sixty Armenians were promoted and bestowed the ranks of field marshals, admirals and major generals.

Today there remain 13,000 World War II veterans, 9,000 of them are disabled.. They are not recipient of any social allowance. The social security ministry explains this by their relatively high pension, amounting to 17,000-25,000 Armenians Drams (between approximately $32 to $42).
