YEREVAN, MAY 6, ARMENPRESS: As reported earlier some 130 delegates from around 20 countries representing branches of the Armenian National Committee (ANC) arrived in Armenia to participate in a two-day ANC summit May 6-7 that is to take up direction of future ANC efforts and Armenia’s foreign and domestic policies.
Artashes Tumanian, chief of president Kocharian’s staff, who addressed the meeting, pointed out that it was president Kocharian who has made the international recognition of the Armenian genocide as one of the priorities of the country’s foreign policy.
“This is the best illustration of consolidation of Armenia’s and Diaspora’s efforts and potential,” he said citing the recognition of the Genocide by parliaments of some countries. “Armenian executive and legislative authorities are determined in their decision to continue these efforts,” he said.
The Armenian National Committee was also praised by foreign minister Vartan Oskanian, who described it as “an organization that has brought to the forefront the national interests of Armenians defending them devotedly. ” It was the National Committee of America that has kept alive the Armenian Cause for decades and today Armenia as an independent state, has inherited what has been preserved by it to continue it into future,” he said.
Oskanian also said that with the emergence of independent Armenian state the meaning and essence of the ANC’s activity has changed. “If before the independence the ANC was involved in protection of the rights and national identity of Armenians in Diaspora, now the main objective is to strengthen Armenia economically and politically along with the pursuance of the Armenian cause.
