BAGHDAD—A member of the Armenian prelacy council of Iraq Barouyr Hagopian, informed the Beirut-based Aztag Daily newspaper yesterday that considering the heavy bombardment of the city by US and British forces, the Armenian community’s losses are relatively limited; he did report, however, that four Armenians were killed. Three members of one Armenian family and a woman had died during gunfights between US and Iraqi forces.
Communications with the city had been severed until recently, and there is still no communication with Armenian communites in Basra, Mosul, Kirkuk and Zakho.
Though bombs have damaged a number of homes and community churches, there are no reports of damage to public structures. As a result of the looting that has overtaken the city, Armenian homes situated near government buildings have been robbed.
Hagopian reported that Armenian community leaders have as a result organized security watches to prevent aggression against churches and community centers.
The same steps have been taken to protect the Armenian embassy in Iraq.
Because roads to the Armenian community’s cemetery are blocked, the four Armenian victims were buried in the community’s shut down old cemetery located in the heart of Baghdad.
Hogopian said that for the sake of security, the community has been holding Sunday services at the Norashen church where Easter services will be held, as well.
