YEREVAN, APRIL 15, ARMENPRESS: Special Olympics Armenia is organizing a European Football Week event April 15-16, which is the second Europe-wide celebration of football for players with mental handicaps in Armenia. The goals of the Special Olympics European Football Week 2003 are to increase the number of football players with mental handicaps who at present have limited opportunity to participate and to use the event to educate people about the abilities of individuals with mental handicaps.
The event is held among the students of six special schools of Armenia. It will aim at providing an opportunity to Special Olympics players to benefit from this great sport that improves physical fitness, develops skills and builds friendships. The event will involve a wide range of professionals involved in the field of sports, health and education. Eighty participants are expected. The event is held at the College of Trade and Economics at Massif 2, borough Yerevan.
Special Olympics, founded in 1968 by Eunice Kennedy Shriver, is the world’s largest year-round program of sports training and competition for children and adults with mental retardation of all ability levels. More than one million athletes in over 160 countries train and compete in 26 Olympic-style summer and winter sports at local, national and international events. Through its sports programs, Special Olympics strives to provide long-term benefits to individuals’ health, self-esteem and social integration.
