arminfo: U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE URGES TURKEY TO LIFT ARMENIA´s BLOCKADE

APRIL 12. The U.S. Administration uses each opportunity to once more urge Turkey to open its boundary with Armenia, says the report of the U.S. Department of State at the disposal of the RFE/RL Armenian Service.

The report prepared in response to the last year’s inquiry of the U.S. Congress on the Armenian-Turkish relations was approved by First Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage. The reports says that U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powel discussed the problem of opening the Armenian-Turkish boundary in the course of recent negotiations in Ankara. The report further says that the opening of the boundary will lead to reduction of transport expenses of Armenia, hereby increasing the trade volume between Armenia and Turkey and improve the economic situation in Armenia and Eastern Turkey. Armenia can become a direct transport corridor between Turkey and Azerbaijan, The opened Turkish-Armenian boundary will secure an uninterrupted railway communication between Istanbul and Baku, Mediterranean and Black Seas, says the report.
