YEREVAN, Armenia — Armenian officials have established a plan to aid
refugees from Iraq in anticipation that thousands of ethnic Armenians
living there may flee to this former Soviet republic, authorities
said Friday.
An ethnic Armenian diaspora has long existed in Iraq. Some groups
put their number at 15,000, but others estimates go as high as 35,000.
Gen. Maj. Levon Stepanian of Armenia’s border guards said Armenia
remained “permanently ready to accept refugees.”
Armenian police also announced that security had been heightened at
strategic facilities around the country in response to the U.S.-led
military action in Iraq.
