YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 21, ARMENPRESS: The chairman of Armenian parliament Armen Khachatrian has joined today the chorus of politicians and part of observers who said that the first round of February 19 presidential election ” was generally held in free and transparent” environment.
Khachatrian also commended the incumbent president Kocharian, who failed to win a landslide victory in the first round, for his conduct “that did not allow to resort to falsification and vote fraud,” as an additional 0.2 percent of popular vote would help his reelection. “Only an elected president could claim for voters’ trust,” he said.
Among other positive things he mentioned the abundance of presidential candidates, another sign of the country’s moving to a stronger democracy that gave voters a chance to choose between various programs of candidates.
“There was an environment for free expression of different opinions and viewpoints and each pronounced word reached the people. No obstacles were for meeting with voters throughout the country,” he said adding that the reported irregularities must be eradicated and never repeated not to cast a shadow on Armenia’s international image.
The second round, he said, should proceed in a more restrained and more civilized atmosphere.
