armenpress: ARMENIAN ENGINEERS PLAN CONSTRUCTION OF MAJOR WATER RESERVOIR

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 21, ARMENPRESS: Armenian experts say about 1 billion cubic meters of water run out of Armenia annually flowing into the border River Arax as there are no facilities to store it in the country. An Armenian research institute dealing with water problems has designed an ambitious plan to prevent this and has sent it to the government’s and national security service’s approval.

The institute’s chief Yuri Javadian says the water reservoir that is supposed to be built near Surmalu village in Armavir province, will be able to collect annually about 600 million cubic meters of water. Capacities of another acting water reservoir on the River Arax are about 525 million cubic meters. Engineers also plan to construct a hydro power plant on the reservoir with annual capacities of 8,760 Kwh. The water from the new reservoir would go to revive salt soils in the province.

The use of waters of border rivers by Armenia is regulated by agreements signed with Turkey and Azerbaijan. Currently Armenian, Azeri and Georgian authorities are preparing a joint agreement on the use of waters of River Debed that flows out of Armenia into Georgia and Azerbaijan. Non-governmental organizations of the three countries have developed a program on keeping the River Kur free from pollutions, which is still to be approved by governments.
