YEREVAN, February 17 — Presidential elections will be held in
Armenia on Wednesday, the fourth in the Transcaucasian republic
since independence.
Citizens aged 18 and older can elect a new president in direct and
equal voting. Under the election law, a citizen not younger than 35 and
living in Armenia not less than 10 years may be elected as president.
The president may not be elected for more than two consecutive terms.
Nine candidates are on the ballot, including incumbent President
Robert Kocharyan.
According to public opinion polls and observers. Kocharyan has the
highest chance of winning.
The presidential post was established in Armenia in 1990.
Levon-Ter-Petrosyan was elected as president twice, in 1991 and 1996.
He resigned in February 1998. Kocharyan won in early elections that
were held in March of the same year.
