TORONTO (Variety) – Director Atom Egoyan’s “Ararat” received five
statuettes, including best film, at Canada’s 23rd Genie awards in
Toronto on Thursday.
The picture, which deals in part with the Armenian Holocaust early
last century, drew prizes for actress (Arsinee Khanjian), supporting
actor (Elias Koteas), original score and costumes.
David Cronenberg won director kudos for the Ralph Fiennes-Miranda
Richardson starrer “Spider.”
There had been raised eyebrows over the nominations, which overlooked
“Spider” in the film category and Egoyan as director.
Mario Azzopardi’s “Savage Messiah,” about a charismatic cult leader,
won actor (Luc Picard), supporting actress (Pascale Montpetit) and
adapted screenplay (Sharon Riis) honors.
Deepa Mehta received a Genie for her original screenplay for the
romantic comedy “Bollywood/Hollywood.” The Golden Reel Award for
top-grossing film went to “Les Boys III.”
