The Matenadaran Depository and Institute of Old Manuscripts, the place where ancient Armenian texts and illuminated hand written books are studied and preserved for the next generations to come has been completely repaired on funds provided by a US-based Lincy Foundations and will open to visitors in late April or early May, its director Sen Arevshatian told Armenpress.
Arevshatian said more exhibits will be on display instead of previous 200 ones. Visitors will see manuscripts in Aramaic, old Geek and Latin languages dating before AD. The Matenadaran has recently received from Japan a special device costing $500,000 for repair and reconstruction of damaged manuscripts which is now being assembled by specialists from Japan.
Matenadaran contains nearly 17,054 of very rare, ancient Armenian and as well as foreign ancient manuscripts from all corners of the world. Of them 11,000 are in Armenia, 3,000 in foreign languages and others are excerpts. Many ancient Greek classical writings have survived and have been preserved to our days thanks to their Armenian translations (original ones being lost forever) from the Golden Age of Armenian Literature in the 5-thand 6-th centuries in which Armenian Literature along with translations of ancient classical writings flourished. Matenadaran is an old Armenian word, which means House of Books or Book Depository.
